Schools need to be safe and welcoming places so that students feel comfortable and are able to learn free from all distractions. To this effect, this spring all schools in UGDSB are collecting data from students and parents to find out about two closely related issues; equity and inclusive education as well as bullying and harassment.   

Collecting this data at Salem will allow us to establish a baseline and determine our current school climate as related to the above issues.  The survey information will be used by our staff to help promote an environment of respect, safety and belonging for all our students.     

The 2012 School Climate Survey for Parents and Guardians is now available online.  Junior students are completing their surveys in class.

It looks as if May is promising to bring us some wonderful warm weather. I am sure the children are ready to enjoy some warmer days.

The next two months will be very busy, both curricularly and extra curricularly as teachers finish up this year’s expectations and plan some special in-school and out-of-school learning experiences for our students. Our goal in offering a variety of activities and learning experiences is to support the diversity of learning styles and needs of our students.

Education Week is during the week of May 7th to 11th. On May 10th we will present our annual Spring Musical. This year we are presenting “Dig It”. Please join us either at 2pm or 7pm. The children, through the guidance of Ms Heffernan and assistance of all the teachers, are looking forward to presenting this wonderful musical to the community.

Welcome to Spring! I just read the journal of a Grade 1 student this week and there was so much excitement in his writing about Spring I wanted to share his thoughts with you.“Spring is here. The birds are flying back from the south. The buds are coming out. It has been crazy weather for Spring. People are wearing shorts. The plants are growing. We get to go on the monkey bars! I Love Spring!” It definitely tells us that spring-fever is in the air here at Salem. Students are writing about it, talking about it and enjoying it.

The Character trait we are working on for the month of April is respect. Staff and students will help acknowledge students exhibiting this character trait.

We are ready for the final push to the end of the year. There is much to look forward to such as our Spring musical, school teams, trips and grad. Please encourage your children to keep working hard until the very end!

March Break is in a couple of weeks, but before that happens we have two wonderful events at Salem. First, the School Council has organized a Family Fun Day on Sunday March 4th. Please join us for a fun filled day. Second, our annual Skatathon is happening on March 9th. We will need parents help to tie skates and assist with supervision. Please let your child(s) teacher know if you can volunteer. Thank you in advanced to the students, parents and staff for supporting our Skatathon. We will let you know how much was raised for the school.
March Break runs from March 12th to 18th. We hope you enjoy the time with your family.

The weather certainly has not been cooperating this year for the outdoor activities that the students always enjoy here at Salem each year.  The cold weather never arrived to get the ice rink started and the toboggan days have been few and far between.  This being said School Council is still planning a fun filled day for the Salem Public School Community.  This Sunday there will tobogganing if the snow arrives and if there is no snow, outdoor and indoor games will be set up for the entire family to enjoy.  Please join us on Sunday March 4 from 1-4 for a fun filled afternoon.
