A school is a place where students are learning the skills and developing the attitudes and collaborative work skills that will be needed to become productive citizens in the 21st century. The collaborative work that happens on a professional activity day is a window into how we want our students to enter the workforce after workplace, highschool or post secondary studies. The skills needed are the same for many areas of employment. At our last professional activity day, teachers, admin and student teachers completed a school effectiveness survey in mixed division groupings to determine how we are doing in the following areas: Assessment, School and Classroom Leadership, Student Voice, Curriculum Teaching and Learning, Programs and Pathways, Home, School and Community Partnerships. We will be looking at the results together to determine which areas could be improved from a staff perspective.

We need your input - Safe Schools Parent Survey
"A positive school climate exists when all members of the school community feel safe, comfortable and accepted (Kevin Costante, October 2010)." In order to promote a positive school climate we need to understand what particular successes and challenges we have at our individual school so that we can work together with school staff, parents and guardians, students and community partners. We are asking parents to fill out the following survey at the link listed below. The survey will remain open until May 11th, 2012. The results help us to determine next steps to improve our school climate. We need the input of many parents to help us obtain an accurate view. Please help us by filling out the following survey:

Thank you for your time and input!

See you at our spring Open House May 8th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, where we will celebrate math learning.

There are many things going on that demonstrate a commitment to learning about and protecting our earth. At the beginning of the year there is an annual audit of waste produced in the school and a subsequent plan to help reduce the amount of waste being produced. Staff and students are becoming proficient at recycling; students and teachers are considering if photocopies are necessary; students are using recycled materials for art projects, and the list goes on.

daffodilsWhen the groundhog came out of his hole last month, he thought he had slept right through winter. This has been a very strange winter weather wise, but here we are in March and the temperatures are still above 0 degrees. The Monday of the Family Day felt very much like spring and while we may get a blast of winter yet, we are well on our way to springtime.

Last month we found a problem with some mould growing inside a wall cavity of the porta-pack. Three classes were temporarily relocated within J.D. Hogarth while the issue was investigated and resolved. We’re pleased to report that repairs to the porta-pack are complete, and classes resumed as usual on January 9. To learn more about the health risks of mould and for tips on managing mould in your own home, visit Health Canada’s excellent resource Mould and Your Health.

Ball on treeHow fortunate we are to be able to promote a sense of equity and inclusion right here in our own home town. It is becoming more rare for children to have role models in their lives who are leaders and who improve the world. It is important for them to see that people can make life choices that can change the world when they set their mind to it.
