C102

The Special Education Department assists students through instructional support, consultation, monitoring, assessment and individual education planning. The Students Resource Room, C102, has been established to promote educational services for students according to their needs and abilities. Each student, all teachers and all school programs, play an important role in reaching this goal. The Resource Room has at its disposal a variety of unique learning and behavioural strategies and programs to assist students.

These strategies and programs include:
  • individual assistance to develop organizational and study skills
  • individual attention in any subject area
  • suggestions to classroom teachers as to how best to meet students exceptionalities
  • room C102 as a quiet room to work
  • extra time to write tests and exams
  • grade 10 literacy test tutoring

In addition, we have computer capabilities to help meet students needs:
  • six online computers are in Room C102
  • one "ALPHA SMART" word processing keyboard for use in room C102
  • "WORD", "WORD Q", "WRITE OUT LOUD", and "WORDPERFECT" word processors for spelling, grammar and writing mechanic problems.
  • "DRAGON NATURALLY SPEAKING"  a writing-aid software that types as you dictate. This program is very useful for students who have trouble getting their thoughts on paper.
  • "KURZWELL 3000" - A reading software that reads any text found on the computer. This system is useful for students who have reading difficulties or those whose comprehension improves when they hear something read to them. It is easy to use and requires minimal training.
These strategies and programs can be accessed by teacher referral or student self-referral.

At the beginning of each semester, the teachers of an exceptional student are provided with educational information that assists them in developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for that student. IEP's are continuously updated to track the needs of our students and copies are readily available by contacting the Resource Room at ext. 317, or by e-mail (lissa.akerstream@ugdsb.on.ca).
