Centennial Idol crowns a champion!

On Thursday, April 2nd, students gathered in the cafeteria to see some of Centennial's most talented singers. The finalists, Jennifer B, Arius, Jennifer P, and Aiden pulled out all the stops to make their final performances fantastic. This year's winner was Jennifer B, captivating her audiences with her charm and beautiful voice. Engaging performances such as "Feels Like Home" by Chantel Kreviazuk and "Popular" from the hit musical Wicked, Jennifer wow'd the judges and her peers with her talented voice and notable stage presence. Congratulations, Jenn!

Mock Trial team has highest finish ever as a team.

On March 30th, the school's mock trial team got up early in the morning to travel to Brantford to compete in the regional mock trial championships. The team members consisted of Peter, Andrea, Sarah, Emma (The Lawyers), Justin and Daniel (The witnesses).  In the 1st round match up, the Spartans battled to victory.  The win set up a match with the same school that knocked out the Spartans last year.  They achieved a great victory, not only winning the match, but also presenting such a great case that they got the "accused convicted", which in this trial was not an easy task.  In the competition's semi-final, the Spartans faced a great team and ended up losing a close battle to Assumption from Burlington. The loss in the semi-final was Centennial's best finish ever.  Awesome work by all students!

Centennial's Spartan Cheerleading Team Placed First at Regional Competition

On Saturday, March 2nd, Centennial's Cheerleading team travelled to Mississauga to compete in the Regional competition. They arrived bright and early to the Hershey Center in order to prepare themselves for their hard two minute and thirty second routine.  Weeks before the competition the girls practiced everyday to perfect their stunts, dances and cheer. With brand new uniforms, the girls were ready to compete. They all worked very hard, performing the routine they had all done a million times before. All their hard worked paid off as they came home with a first place trophy. The team is now ready to work even harder as they will be going to Provincials in April.

Great Work Spartans!

Mock Trial Team finishes second at Douglas Cup

On Saturday, March 2nd, Centennial's two mock trial teams competed for legal glory at the Douglas cup.  Four teams were competing this year, they included Centennial (2), Bishop Mac, and Lourdes.  In the opening matches, BM defeated Lourdes in the one semi-final and the Centennial Senior Team, defeated the Junior Team by 2 points.   It was great work by both teams and it showed the true talent of all participants.  In the final, the Spartans battled the Celtics and it was a great legal battle.  The contest went back and forth as both sides tried to outwit the other.  In the end, the match ended up tied and the decision unfortunately went to BM.  The seniors should be commended on their great legal knowledge and execution of their plan.

Boys Basketball Win D10 Championship

The Spartan Boys Basketball team travelled to the University of Guelph on February 20th to play in the District 10 finals against Ross.

It was an intense game, the Spartans took a quick lead, but then Ross come back tying it up 8-8. Ross then got ahead of Centennial but at the end of the first quarter Brian got a quick two pointer putting us ahead by one point. The second quarter was a battle as the Royals pulled ahead at the beginning, then the Spartans ended the quarter ahead 36-32.

The Spartans came out in the third quarter strong and took a slight lead to end the third.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, both Brain and Jay had four fouls, as Jay sat on the bench, Brian played strong and committed his last foul, and he fouled out of the game. Jay then came on to replace Brian and played very strong and a few minutes later Jay also fouled out. The Spartans shook it off, and continued to play strong and gained a 7 point advantage. Ross scored a quick three pointer, and in the last 11 seconds they scored a two pointer but it wasn't enough. The Spartans ended the game on the winning side and won, 59-57.  This win gave the Spartans 8 D10 Championships over the past 9 years. Top scorers for the game were Rob with 15 and Jay with 11. Adrian V and Brian played an excellent game off the bench and sparked the Spartans victory.

Good Luck At CWOSSA

Girls Hockey Claims D10 Championship

On February 26th, our Spartan Girls walked as a team to Centennial Arena where Bishop Mac was waiting. The Girls walked in confidentially, entered the changeroom and out screamed music. The girls got dressed as their music was pumping. Bishop Mac had started their warm up when our girls took to the ice. The crowd went wild. The girls never hesitated once as the puck dropped to the ice and as they began the D10 Final.

The Spartan girls took the lead in the first, where Brittany M scored unassisted. The period also included a penalty against Ashlean and one against Bishop Mac. Other than that, the first period was a sampling of what was to come.

The second period, being more eventful, was when our girls broke out and scored two. Morgan scored at 5:00, assisted by Jill and Julianne. Jill then scored of her own, unassisted.

Entering the third period, our Spartan Girls took to the newly zambonied ice and held off Bishop Mac for the entire period. The girls killed two penalties and claimed the D10 Championship with a 3-0 win over Bishop Mac.

Shout out to Lauren who made numerous saves and kept the shut-out alive.

Congratulations to all the girls and coaches!

Good Luck At CWOSSA

Spartan Captures Silver Medal

Andrew returns from 2 weeks in Boise, Idaho where he played as a member of Canada's Floor Hockey Team. His team played hard throughout the two weeks and battled a variety of countries from around the world, including Russia and Jamaica.  His team returns as silver medallists after a heart-breaking 8-7 loss to Jamaica, in front of a live audience of 2000, last Friday.  Andrew should be commended on his hard work and dedication.  He has made the Spartan community very proud!

Rob Nash Emphasizes M.A.D.D. Presentation

On February 11, Rob Nash from the band Live on Arrival paid a special visit to Centennial on behalf of the M.A.D.D. presentation held by O.S.A.I.D. The presentation consisted of a dramatic representation of a horrible accident that happened because of impaired driving. The audience watched Rob Nash on screen as he took us through many real incidents that occurred to real families and friends. Rob Nash was then brought on stage to convey his message in regards to drunk driving while playing an original song of his for the audience. The show then closed off with the president of M.A.D.D. Wellington presenting O.S.A.I.D. with a lovely banner.

Big thanks to O.S.A.I.D. and the guest speakers.

115 Centennial students attended the Deca competitions over the weekend of February 7 & 8. They stayed at the Sheridan in Toronto. The Centennial students participated in a range of events from accounting, marketing, sports management, finance, and entrepreneurial. They competed against many other promising students from several other schools.

To make it into Deca Internationals, you must place Top 5 in your category. An amazing group of 33 students qualified for the international level in Anaheim, California.

EastSide Mario's Basketball Tournament

On January 9th and 10th, The annual Eastside Mario's Tournament was held at Centennial. Several schools from around Ontario travelled to our high school to show their stuff. It was a great tournament, with a very high level of play demonstrated by the boys.

Our Spartan team played well in each of their games and stole the show. The Boys went 3-0, by defeating Grand River from Kitchener, Frontenac from Kingston, and in the final Sir John A. MacDonald from Kitchener.  The boys had a great tournament and should be commended on their effort.  Travin was named MVP of the tournament and Adrian A and Robert were named tournament All-Stars

Spiking For A Better Future

On January 8th, 2009, our Senior Girls Volleyball team spiked their way to victory against the Ross team. The girls, through hard work and determination, won 3-1 in sets. They wore their pink jerseys and put pink ribbons in their hair to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. Forum and SSA teamed up to advertise this event and it was the first time in Centennial's history that any sports team had done this. The gym bleachers filled up with students, parents, and teachers all cheering for a cause. At the start of the day, pink ribbons were handed out to everyone in the school and donations to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation were made throughout the day. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch because it was a great turn out. The jerseys that were worn by the players are being auctioned off for additional donations.

DID YOU RAISE YOUR GAME?

The Grade 12 Business Leadership class ran a very successful "Raise Your Game, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament" yesterday. The success of this event is due to the generous support of Ms. Magahay, Ms. Chesney, Mr. Magee, Mr. Treiguts, Ms. Kuz, Mr. Tozer, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Milton, and Mr. Ernie Trento and Mr. Brian Trento.  Thank you so much to everyone who supported this event, the students were awesome!  In total 15 teams participated.  The winning team was a CCVI team, which included, Mike, Noor, Nirushan, and Mac, which walked away with Raptors tickets.  So far the students have raised over $500, all of which will go to the United Way's Tomorrow Fund.

HAH! WE HAD A THEME ALL ALONG

The Music Knights holiday concert was a grand, rip roaring success. Our MC's decided to start off our night by telling us that they didn't have a theme! OH NOES! But their crazy antics throughout their theme competition certainly made up for the lack of theme.
Well throughout the night, the Music Knights dazzled the crowd with their musical talents of a holiday nature. Previous K-Niggets joined the Music Knights on stage for the classic holiday song, "Sleigh Ride" and contributed their part in the oh-so famous "CLAP".
Mr. Goddard's granddaughters made a guest appearance as they conducted the very last song of the evening. The crowd just about ate them up!

Special thanks to all Music Knights, Jenn Rodgers, Mr.Goddard, Mr.Daniels and the Tech Crew.

'THE RUMORS' WERE TRUE

Ms. Austin's adaptation of Neil Simon's play 'Rumors' was a grand success. The Production course practiced dilligently from the start of the school year to put on such a spectacular show. Sets had to be made, lines had to be rehearsed and it all came together last week as they held their morning and evening performances. The Production course had a wonderful time, keeping the crowd laughing, but also making them suspicious. What really happened, was the question.

Special thanks to Ms. Austin, the Production course and the always so helpful Tech Crew.

CARDBOARD BOATS TO LONDON!

On Tuesday, December the 2nd, two Centennial teams travelled to London to compete in the regional boat race competition. We had the largest boats and other teams were amazed that we all had equal amounts of cardboard.

The team consisting of Julia, Akindele, Mankays and Levi managed to hold the most weight with five people (they held 7 people at our run-off competition) and it was just over 500 lbs. The other team made up of James, Tim, Aedan and Leslie had a very fine pirate motif. It would have to said that they had the best "team spirit" of all the teams that were there.

Out of 21 teams, our teams places 6th and 15th.  Excellent job for our 1st time in the competition.
