Art Show and Jazz evening a great success! |
| |
|
In was another great display of Centennial's artists, during the annual art show. On top the great art, the audience was treated to another amazing night of music. Over two days, staff, students, and the community were able to see all of the hard work this year's art students put in to create all of the different masterpieces. Pictured above is the year's Best in show Piece. It was created Jia Sheng. If you weren't able to see the art this year make sure to come out next to see all of the amazing work. Finally, it was the last performance for many of Music Knights, as they graduate and it was pleasure listening to their music for many years! |

| Back to Back OFSAA Champs! |
Mock Trial Team makes Centennial History! |
Centennial continues its dominance at U of G Brain Bee! |
Spartan swimmers made even more history this year, as they were the first team ever to repeat as an OFSAA champion. This year 8 female swimmers were able to dominate the pool. Winning the gold with a whopping number of 597 points, beating the runner up by 216 points! Truly amazing. Gold medallists include: Sam, Riley, and Erin. As well, the relay team of Erin, Katherine, Haylie, and Micayley defended their gold medal they won last year. The other swimmers that contributed to the team title by earning points for the team include: Emma and Victoria. This group of athletes will look to go for the three peat next year as only one of these swimmers will graduate this year. Amazing swim season once again!!! |
This year's Mock Trial made a great run at the regional mock trial competition. In the first round match up, Centennial got off to good start by winning their first match. The witnesses stood strong on the stand and our lawyers showed off their legal knowledge. In the semi-finals, the team faced Burlington Assumption, a team that makes the finals almost every year. Again the witnesses were amazing, as they never crumbled during cross-examination. To top it off our two crosses were amazing, as they were able to go after each of the crown's witnesses. These two things led to a Centennial victory and Centennial history. It was the first time a Centennial team had made it to the regional finals. In the final, the team faced a perennial powerhouse Brantford Assumption. Once again the team fell short against this very well prepared team and lost a close battle. Congrats to the following team members on a great season: Yvonne, Arad, Shaun, Jake, Ian, and Sheldon. |
The following students competed in the U of G Brain Bee competition: Annie, Sarah, Toluwanimi, Kevin, Sanduni, Bhawan, and Chelsea. The final elimination round was made up of all Centennial students: Annie, Toluwanimi, Kevin, Sanduni and Bhawan. Toluwanimi won!!! She will go on to the Canadian National Brain Bee at McMaster at the end of May. Centennial students have won the U. of G. brain bee every year it has been running. We have also gone to the Canadian Brain Bee every year and have won twice and come in 2nd and 3rd in other years. |

| Andrew brings home gold again! |
Improv finishes second at regional competition! |
March Madness winners crowned |
At the Special Olympics, Andrew's Guelph floor hockey team won all of their nine games at the national championships. It was the first team in history to ever win to back-to-back gold medals. The team dominated the competition throughout the entire week and in the final they defeated the Quebec team 6-3. Andrew's team will be traveling to Korea to compete in the world championships in the spring. Awesome work Andrew! |
Once again our two improv teams had successful regional competition. Our first team did an excellent job during their night of competition. The judges liked many of their performances, however they were unable to move on to the final round. Our second squad had an excellent first night of competition. The judges were wowed and the team was able to move on to the finals. In the finals, the group did an amazing job. It came down to the last round of scenes. Unfortunately, the team came up just short and just missed out on the provincial championships. Another amazing season for the teams. |
In the annual March madness week, 3 winners were crowned. In an exciting 3 on 3 final, the winners, Hubid, Aris, and Harman, pictured above were able to hit a game winning shot at the buzzer. Tarang had scored a basket, with about 5 seconds left on the clock, but it was too much as the game winning 3 was scored with no time on the clock. In another exciting 3 point competition, the event had to go a tie breaker after the final round. Tarang was able to hit the shot with no time on the clock to win the 3 point competition. In the final event, about 25 students competed for the bump title. With some strong shooting, the winner of the bump competition was Harman. It was a good week of basketball action. |

| Festive Assembly wows the Audience! |
Music Knights put on a awesome show! |
Spartans sweep their own Volleyball tournaments |
| In continuing on with a Spartan tradition, many students put in many hours to give some holiday cheer before everyone went on the break. There were many great singing performances, the game called park bench was played by our improv team, making many of our audience members laugh. There were also two puppet type shows put on. One was even done using black lighting. The afternoon was capped of by two dance performances, both vying for the title of best dance group. In the end the group of Ms. J. King, Mrs. Buddo, Ms. Franklin, Mr. Mulhern, and Ms. Parker won the title. A special thanks goes to Ms. A. King for all of her work organizing the event and to the tech crew giving the background support. |
In another Centennial tradition the Music Knights group had their annual festive concert. They performed many festive songs and some other classic tunes during their performance. Each of the 5 groups should be commended on how excellent each piece was and it truly showed off of their hard work they had put in during the 1st semester. A special thanks to Mr. Daniels and Ms. Hunt for all of their hard work organizing a great event. |
The Spartans hosted two volleyball tournaments, a Junior and Senior one. Both days saw many great matches. Both our junior and senior team were able to advance to the playoff round. In the Senior semi, the team was able to control the opposition and move into the final. In a very exciting 3 set match, the girls were able to win the third game and take home the title. Much like the Seniors, the Juniors rolled into playoff action and were able to win their semi-final match. In the final, just as exciting as the senior one, the team was able to pull out a close third game and win the championship. Great work by both teams. |

Congratulations to all cast and crew for putting on an exciting, shocking, and captivating show!! |
Senior Business students from Centennial participated in the Guelph High School Business Challenge on Friday, November 4.
The day began with a keynote address from Mr. Chris Cheng, a VP at iBrokerPower Capital Inc. who spoke about NOW - No Opportunity Wasted.
Following the format of the TV show Dragon's Den, teams of students from high schools in Guelph and Orangeville were asked to develop a business that targeted baby boomers. TD Canada Trust Bank Managers acted as the 'dragons' and listened to the wide variety of ideas - from retirement magazines to telephone apps for boomers. Congratulations to Kritta's team with the winning idea - AccuPro, a golf ball with a GPS.
Many thanks to TD Canada Trust for sponsoring the event and to the Branch Managers for spending the day with our students. |
The Junior Boys team finished off an amazing season at the CWOSSA championship. The team was able to win both of their round robin games, setting up a match up in the semi finals against Cameron Heights. In one of the games, the Spartans won 35-33. It was a true battle between two great teams. With the Spartans able to win their semi-final, they entered the final looking to cap off an undefeated season. In a contest where their starting setter was battling sickness and their starting middle went down with a severely sprained ankle, the team for the most part controlled the action and were able to win 3 game to one. It will go down as one of the greatest seasons in Spartan history! |

Centennial's Dance Inc. put on another fabulous show on November 9th and 10th. If you were able to watch, the performance was an epic dance journey through the brief period of time in which humans have made earth their home. The three Dance Inc. executives, Haylie, Caite, and Emma, should be commended for all of their effort they put forth over the past couple of months. All of the choreographers did an amazing job creating 14 dances for the audience. A special congratulations goes to Ms. Knox for her artistic direction and all of countless hours she devoted to make this event such a success! |

| Terry Fox and Spirit Day a great success! |
Grade 9 Dodgeball Champs! |
Grade 9 Orientation a success! |
The weather forecast called for rain on September 29, but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of Centennial. It was also our school's spirit day, so besides raising money for cancer research, students and staff were dressed in their finest purple and gold attire.
Students arrived in the big gym and listened as Tara sung a stunning rendition of O Canada, accompanied by Mr. Daniels on the piano. During the run, Centennial Clubs sold items to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation: Z-club & Global Outreach. As always, there are some amazing individual and homeform results. Top fundraiser was Zsolt with a grand total of $385. Top homeform was Mr. Parsons' Grade 9 homeform who raised $785. And in a new category, Ms. King was the top staff fundraiser. We would like to thank our generous sponsors who contributed prizes:
McDonald's,
East Side Mario's, Symposia (Centennial's Cafeteria), & Domino's Pizza. And finally, we would like to thank everyone in the Centennial community who helped to make our Terry Fox Run the annual success that it is: Their amazing Spartan Spirit raised over $11,000 to help conquer cancer. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. |
Centennial's annual Grade 9 Dodgeball tournament was an amazing event. Twenty-Four teams were entered into the tournament. After 5 days of competition were students did their best to dodge ball thrown at them and they did their best to knock out their opponents, it came down to two teams. In a thrilling final, that went back and forth one team came out victorious. The winning team is pictured above. They will be moving on the city championships |
On Tuesday August 30, almost all of Centennial's grade 9 students participated in their school's orientation. They all were able to get a tour of the school and got to meet many of our staff. At the end of the day they all enjoyed some pizza and pop and were ready for their first day of high school.
